Andrew W. Carter

Andrew W. Carter co-founded Ocean Tomo, LLC, and holds several positions within the firm.  He is a Managing Director and Practice Leader of the Expert Services practice group, he is on the Board of Managers of the firm and is a member of Ocean Tomo Investment Group, LLC. Ocean Tomo Investment Group is composed of Transaction Advisory, Investments, and non-securities Investment Banking. He holds the FINRA Series 7 license.

For more than 20 years Mr. Carter has focused on intellectual property value determination for clients in a wide variety of industries, including industrial products, industrial machinery, numerous consumer products, electronics, telecommunications, transportation, Internet services, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, financial services, securities, casinos/gaming, and entertainment.

Before forming Ocean Tomo, Mr. Carter was one of the founding partners of the Duff & Phelps Capital Partners Sale/License-Back Fund. Mr. Carter was co-head of the patent purchase and licensing aspects of the Fund. Prior to that he was a partner at the then-largest U.S. consulting firm that focused on the economic and litigation issues related to intellectual property. Mr. Carter also spent almost five years as an engineer, consulting with engineers and management at hundreds of manufacturing facilities throughout the country.

Mr. Carter is also a frequent speaker on the financial, accounting, business, and legal issues related to intellectual property. He has authored over a dozen book chapters and articles on intellectual property licensing, strategy, and litigation.

Mr. Carter holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, and an MBA from the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business. He is a Certified Public Accountant as well as a Licensed Public Accountant in the State of Illinois. Mr. Carter is certified in Financial Forensics, and he is a Certified Licensing Professional. He is also an active member of the Licensing Executives Society, most recently as the Chairman of the Valuation and Taxation Committee.

Ryan Zurek

Ryan Zurek is a Director in Ocean Tomo Investment Group and in Ocean Tomo’s Advisory Services practice, which is composed of Transaction Advisory, Investments, and non-securities Investment Banking. He holds the FINRA Series 7 license.

Mr. Zurek plays an integral role in all aspects of the firm's investment banking initiatives including facilitating IP-driven transactions, mergers and acquisitions, IP monetization strategies, financing and IP-based special situations investments.

Mr. Zurek has significant experience developing licensing strategy, conducting independent market research and cash flow analysis, and advising clients on the valuation of intellectual property for capital raises, licensing, merger and acquisitions, divestitures, IP spin-offs and other business transactions. Prior to joining the Investments practice, Mr. Zurek spent 5 years with Ocean Tomo's Expert Testimony practice where he spearheaded engagements involving the valuation of intangible assets across a broad spectrum of technologies.

Mr. Zurek has experience consummating transactions and advising clients in areas such as consumer electronics, enterprise networking, big data, medical devices, online media and retail, oil and gas, and telecommunications, among others.

Mr. Zurek holds a B.S. in Finance from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business.

Kevin Osman

Kevin Osman is an Associate in Ocean Tomo Investment Group and in Ocean Tomo’s Advisory Services practice, which is composed of Transaction Advisory, Investments, and non-securities Investment Banking. He holds the FINRA Series 7 license.

Mr. Osman serves as a key member of the Transactions Advisory practice, assisting with all aspects of the practice’s operations.  Mr. Osman has spent significant time handling client relationships and analyzing the potential of IP monetization opportunities.  Mr. Osman has also managed the patent portfolio monetization process for a number of clients. He has substantial experience developing marketing materials, identifying target potential acquirers, crafting sales pitches, and participating in sales discussions and negotiations with multinational entities big and small across a wide variety of industries and geographies.

Prior to joining the Transactions practice, Mr. Osman spent 3 years with Ocean Tomo’s Expert Testimony practice where he gained experience on engagements involving the economic analysis of intangible assets across a broad spectrum of technologies.The Transactions group leverages its relationships, expertise, and experience to provide its clients with a wide variety of solutions to their intellectual property monetization needs.

Prior to his time with Ocean Tomo, Mr. Osman previously interned with Union Bank in Los Angeles, California. While there, he concentrated his efforts on streamlining the company’s processing systems and creating tools for evaluating the implementation of company initiatives.

Mr. Osman graduated with honors from the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California with a BS in Business Administration, focusing on Finance and Investments.

James A. Trueman

James A. Trueman is a Managing Director in Ocean Tomo Investment Group and oversees Advisory Services for Ocean Tomo, LLC which is composed of Transaction Advisory, Investments, and non-securities Investment Banking. He holds the FINRA Series 7 license.

Prior to joining Ocean Tomo, Mr. Trueman was Vice President of Business Development at Acacia Research Corporation where his responsibilities included driving patent acquisitions and partnerships in a broad range of high-value technology areas.  As Managing Partner of M1 Partners, Mr. Trueman offered IP licensing, transaction, business development, and strategy consulting services across a diverse set of industries.  As an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company, Mr. Trueman led teams helping companies grow existing businesses and launch new ventures.  Mr. Trueman started his career as a Product Manager, which included working in Oracle’s middleware business. 

Mr. Trueman holds an MBA from The Wharton School and a Bachelor of Science from the University of California at Berkeley.

Nick Hill

Nick Hill is an Analyst in Ocean Tomo Investment Group and in Ocean Tomo’s Advisory Services practice, which is composed of Transaction Advisory, Investments, and non-securities Investment Banking. He holds a FINRA Series 7 license.

Nick has experience advising clients across a broad spectrum of industries and technologies, including telecommunications, industrials, and consumer product.

Prior to joining Ocean Tomo, Nick was a Senior Associate at Duff & Phelps where he worked on engagements valuing intellectual property in the context of patent infringement litigation. Nick graduated with a B.B.A. in Finance from University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business.

Vishal Tayal

Vishal Tayal is a Director in Ocean Tomo Investment Group and in Ocean Tomo’s Advisory Services practice, which is composed of Transaction Advisory, Investments, and non-securities Investment Banking. He holds the FINRA Series 7 license.

Vishal brings a comprehensive and balanced investment banking, strategy and business development background to Ocean Tomo. He is a seasoned investment banking and strategy executive with experience in M&A, product strategy, business development, start-ups, corporate finance, raising capital and merger integration. He has over 15 years of advisory and operational experience in technology with Ernst & Young Capital Advisors, Sybase (SAP), Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Deloitte Consulting.

Vishal has led multi-billion dollar M&A and financing transactions with Bank of America and also executed early stage growth capital and sponsor recapitalizations with boutique investment banks. His strategy advisory includes activist defense planning, directing lender on restructuring, formulating partnerships for growth for several Fortune-500 companies. He has led the corporate development and strategy efforts for Sybase (SAP) including integration for SAP’s acquisition of Sybase. Earlier in his career, he has led business development and operations efforts for start-ups.

Vishal holds an MBA in Finance from Michigan State and a BS in Engineering from University of Missouri.
